Whispered interpretation is also called chuchotage. Unlike a simultaneous interpreter working from a booth, a whispering interpreter conveys the message directly to one or two listeners in a murmuring tone. The mode requires no specialised equipment, which is what makes it practical in small group settings and informal conversations.
It is harder than it sounds. The interpreter is doing the same real-time work as a booth interpreter — listening, processing and speaking at once — but without acoustic isolation, at a volume that must not disturb the room, and often with no second interpreter to rotate with. It takes experience and specific training to keep it accurate.
